The use of simulation to develop products in a virtual testing environment is becoming increasingly common. Punch Powertrain applies a suite of simulation tools Which can increase the traditional physical test methods. This is evident in the test of the new transmission. The company notes that transmission testing can be a complex business. Transmissions need to be compatible with every other component of the vehicle, while some parts are still under development and not available for testing. This is where hybrid test beds come in. Punch Powertrain tests its transmissions in a partly physical, partly virtual setup, where the software simulates certain components. It claims to be the latest technology that allows for quick turnaround and flexibility. One area where this is useful is audio testing. Engineers test transmission noises. This is something they can start doing even when they don’t have major components, like an engine, yet. Engine virtualization also offers the advantage of having lower noise than the combustion engine, allowing for a better assessment of transmission noise.
Virtual reality (VR) applications are growing rapidly across sectors as diverse as entertainment, professional services, and even education. VR technology is now being innovatively extended to the automotive industry by independent creative design studio in London, NewTerritory which has created a multi-sensory virtual reality experience that is designed to help the auto industry and alleviate some of the challenges presented by semi-autonomous driving. Using the latest virtual reality technology, the company enables the test driver to experience a fully immersive experience, allowing the company to monitor heart rate, reactions to various stimuli, and more. We visited the NewTerritory office in London To speak with Director of Design and Creative Technology Tim Smith, to find out more about this unique technology.
With the departure of Datsun, Nissan now has three brands, each of which needs a lot of investment. Our new report this week examines two of the three – Infiniti and Venusia.
The process behind painting vehicles is often a tedious task that takes several hours, sometimes days, between coats with visors usually involved in more complex designs. With this in mind, leading digital technology company ABB Robotics has developed a robot to aid in this task. Equipped with 1,000 nozzles in the print head, the robot sees artwork and design tasks completed in less than 30 minutes. This technology called “PixelPaint” can be applied in a single layer and opens the door to the personal design market for the auto industry. We spoke to Joerg Reger, General Manager of ABB Business Line Automotive, Discrete Robotics and Automation to find out more..
Renault said more than 300 patents have been filed for the Megane E-Tech Electric design. The automaker said it saw the electric motor play a strategic role in the EV value chain and decided to [re]Designed entirely in-house. The concentration is in the greater Paris region, all the active parts (rotor, stator, power electronics, reducer) are manufactured and assembled at the Cleon plant (Seine-Maritime) using less materials and energy used in the process, while research and development is concentrated at Technocentre in Guyancourt ( Evelyn). “We invented a magnet-free rotor winding process. The magnet has been replaced by copper, which has a much smaller environmental impact. The patented process also makes it possible to modify the current flowing through the rotor so as to reduce the amount of electricity used by the battery, especially at high speeds and on highways.”
