Are you a student looking for a southern foundation scholarship? Do you want to study in the USA without worrying about your current financial situation? Then this article is for you.

Through rent-free housing and cooperative living, Southern Scholarship Foundation supports students who lack financial resources, demonstrate excellent academic merit, and exemplify good character to attend institutions of higher education.

For more than 65 years, SSF has helped students achieve their dreams of attending their choice university through our partnerships at Florida Gulf Coast University, University of Florida, Santa Fe College, Florida State University, Flagler College – Tallahassee, Florida A&M University, and Tallahassee Community College. While SSF does not provide monetary-based scholarships, we offer rent-free homes located near our partner institutions. They currently have 25 homes statewide and serve 453 students.

Southern Scholarship Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Eligibility Requirements.

Financial Need

Financial Need is determined by the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). An EFC above 07500 requires an extenuating circumstance.

3.0 GPA

A minimum 3.0 unweighted state GPA or 675 GED score is required to be considered. Any applications submitted with a GPA below 3.0 or 675 will not be considered.

Excellent Character

Character is provided by the letters of recommendation submitted with the application. We look for young adults who are involved in the community, have worked, and still maintain a high GPA.

University Acceptance

Applicants must be accepted to one of the seven university partners. Florida Gulf Coast University, University of Florida, Santa Fe College, Tallahassee Community College, Florida A&M University, Florida State University, or Flagler College – Tallahassee

Application;

When is the application due?

Southern Scholarship Foundation has hard application deadlines of November 1st (for the Spring Semester) and April 1st (for the Fall Semester). Applications submitted after these deadlines will not be considered for acceptance.

Is there an age limit to apply?

All applicants, including those reapplying, need to be 25 years or younger on or before their first day of school of the semester they are applying.

How does SSF welcome non-binary/transgender individuals?

Southern Scholarship Foundation will to the extent possible, place students in housing that is most suitable to the gender identity of the respective student. SSF has a zero-tolerance for bullying, social isolation, or harassment based on any aspect of a person’s identity. Individuals are encouraged to speak with the Director of Student Affairs to discuss what housing option will best fit their needs.

Does SSF offer mixed-gender housing?

Southern Scholarship Foundation uses housing labeled female or male. However, from time to time some houses may not have enough residents to maintain an affordable Food & Services bill for each resident. Therefore, SSF may offer mixed-gender housing as warranted.

Can international students apply to the Southern Scholarship Foundation?

Yes. SSF accepts all students that meet the eligibility requirements. International students who do not have an EFC number must use the link provided in the application to calculate it.

If I would like to be considered for multiple campuses, what should I do?

Applicants who are interested in being considered for more than one campus will need to denote this information on the application. There is a section that asks for your top choice and other campuses you would like to be considered for.

I have been placed on the waiting list. How likely am I to get a spot and when will I find out?

Throughout the semesters, vacancies tend to arise at SSF. If and when this occurs, the Director of Student Affairs will carefully consider all wait-listed students for any vacancies. SSF cannot guarantee that a spot will open. It is advisable for all wait-listed students to continually check their email for updates. All applicants are encouraged to secure on-campus housing. SSF has a partnership with most housing departments. If selected for a scholarship, most housing departments will release you of your dorm contract with proof of acceptance into SSF. However, SSF cannot release you from an apartment lease or sublease.

Do I have to reapply each year?

All residents are instructed to complete a Scholarship Renewal Application at the end of each spring semester. As long as the resident is not on Academic or Conduct Probation, completes the application on time & correctly, and has maintained the basic scholarship requirements (3.0 cumulative GPA, EFC below 7500, and cooperative living within the house), the resident’s scholarship is renewable for the following year.

Do I have to complete an application if I am a former resident reapplying to SSF?

Yes, however, residents who leave SSF and want to reapply must contact the Director of Student Affairs for their respective campus before starting an application. If a resident was dismissed after being placed on Academic Probation, their cumulative GPA must be a 3.0 before consideration. Any resident that has been dismissed due to Conduct Probation will not be accepted back.

For FAMU Residents – Does living on the SSF FAMU campus qualify as on-campus housing?

Yes, it does, and satisfies the first year requirement for students.

How do I submit my letter of recommendation?

Once you create a profile within the application, you will be able to add a recommender who will be sent an email with the link to submit the letter of recommendation. You will be notified via email once we have received the letter of recommendation. Only after we receive the letter will you be able to submit your application.

How is SSF handling COVID within its facilities?

How much do I have to pay to live in the scholarship houses?

Upon acceptance to SSF, each student must pay a $300 reservation fee. The reservation fee is a one-time fee, paid directly to SSF, of which $150 is refundable when a student leaves SSF (in good standing). To live at SSF, residents pay a Food & Services Bill that averages $1,200 statewide and is paid directly to their assigned house. Each house has its own checking account to cover the household expenses of food, utilities, cable, laundry, parking, wireless internet, fire monitoring, and maintenance.

What if I do not have the $275 of the Food & Services Bill on move-in day?

Each student must pay at least $275 to receive keys and move into the house. If you do not have $275 upon move-in you will need to contact the Director of Student Affairs as you may not be able to move in without it.

How do I pay my Food & Services Bill?

Each resident must pay their Food & Services Bill directly to their scholarship house using a check, money order, or Venmo (must disable Purchase Protection). Residents can also pay their Food & Services Bill through the Donate page on the SSF website, and they must pay the processing fee. Details are provided to residents after scholarship acceptance
