Goodenough College London is a small, residential college for international postgraduates in Kensington, West London. Goodenough students are enrolled in part-time or full-time courses at City University London. The College offers an informal academic community designed to encourage cross-cultural understanding between its large international student body and the UK host culture.

What is it like to study at Goodenough?

The atmosphere at Goodenough is relaxed and friendly, with access to pleasant common rooms throughout the building. Each floor has a shared kitchen that provides microwaves, kettles, fridges, and basic utensils, etc. Breakfast is available each morning from 8 am until 9 am Monday to Friday (from 10 am on Saturdays) through self-service. Dinner is available on two evenings per week and students wishing to eat out must do so with fellow residents as their guests.

Accommodation

There are four double rooms on each floor, as well as nine single study bedrooms. Shared bathroom facilities for men and women are provided at the end of each corridor. Room dimensions vary between 5m² (single study bedroom)and 7m² (double room). All rooms have a sink and bedside table and all except those in the older section of the building have carpets and built-in cupboards. The newer part features full-height wall-to-wall carpeting. Bedroom doors can be locked from inside by means of a locking cam with a plastic key that is unique to each individual room. The College does not provide internet access in the rooms.

Tuition Fee

The successful applicant will be asked to pay an advance sum of £2,000 towards their course fees for accommodation and meals, with the balance payable at the beginning of each term. This payment is refundable if notice is given that you no longer require College residence or wish to cancel your place on a course at least one month before the start date of either term.

The remainder of their fees is due annually by 31st July each year. Fees can be paid via direct bank transfer or cheque (made payable to Goodenough College). Admission Requirements

Goodenough College is unique amongst British Universities in having no entrance exam or interview and accepting students solely on the basis of academic merit, without regard to the school attended or the grades achieved.

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree with at least an upper second class honors and/or be able to demonstrate aptitude for their chosen course through work experience and/or personal references.

There are no age restrictions but applicants must be mature enough to adapt quickly and easily to life in London.

We do not accept students who have lived in-country for more than five years while studying towards their previous degree (unless they were born there). You may apply for up to two places. For further information go to the “How To Apply” section on this website.

What courses are available at Goodenough College?

Goodenough offers a wide range of full-time and part-time courses in management, humanities, and social sciences approved by City University London. In addition, students have access to seminars and lectures given by some of the world’s leading thinkers in their field during each semester at City University.

Goodenough College is a specialist postgraduate college. It is conveniently situated near Russell Square tube station within walking distance from most colleges and universities when studying in London including the University of London’s biggest college, UCL.

Goodenough provides accommodation for up to 150 students on its residential premises where they can enjoy a supportive environment for their academic studies. The college organizes seminars and conferences with leading academics, writers, and policymakers from all over the world who share their research findings with an interdisciplinary group of students under one roof.

This allows everyone to have access to different views and perspectives of the challenges faced by society. Different educational opportunities are provided for part-time students during the day and in the evenings to suit their needs and preferences. Goodenough College – University Residence has both triple rooms and double rooms for students, with single occupancy available upon request. Single occupancy is not guaranteed, however, it will be assigned to you if there are no other requests for the room type.

Triple rooms vary greatly in size and location across the college, therefore please contact our office directly should this be your preferred room type so we can check availability prior to your application. The college offers 17 different types of triple rooms including small singles up to large tripples. Triple rooms range in size from 4.5m2 (small triple) to over 9m2 (large triple).

Does Goodenough College – University Residence have its own sports facilities?

Goodenough offers a full programmes of physical activities on offer outside of our courses including over 20 fitness classes per week and a brand new Fitness Studio that opened in January 2015. In addition to this, we have an onsite Sports Hall and Gym Membership at discounted rates with Fitness 19 situated just behind the college.

What is included in the room rate? Are there any additional bills/taxes?

The cost of rooms includes all utilities (electricity, water, WiFi), satellite TV, linens, and towels. Residents are responsible for their own food during their stay with Goodenough College – University Residence, though some basic cooking items are provided upon request at no extra charge by our office or restaurant staff. The only other expense that you will have is if you would like to dine out with friends which you are able to do once you are settled at Goodenough.

What is the security like at Goodenough College – University Residence? What if I lose my key?

Residents are issued with swipe cards which are used for gaining access into the main building and throughout the college, as well as within their rooms. Lost swipe cards can be reported to Reception upon check-in and will be deactivated and a new one delivered by post for a £15 administration fee. There is also a CCTV system that covers all areas of the college and additional staff on call 24 hours per day in case of an emergency. Please note it is your responsibility to ensure your room door is locked when you leave your room so please remember this if you plan to take a holiday.

Are Goodenough College – University Residence’s dorm rooms furnished? If so, what do they come with?

All accommodation is fully furnished including wardrobe space, bed, and desk to accommodate your needs while studying at Goodenough. There are also large shared kitchens on each floor which include all appliances e.g. fridge-freezer, oven, microwave, and dishwasher. Towels and linen will be provided in all accommodations upon arrival.

I don’t speak any English – will I be disadvantaged when trying to communicate with other residents or staff members?

Will I have difficulty settling in? How does this affect my induction period? What if I’m the only person in my room who speaks my native language (and other students in shared rooms don’t)?

In order to consider your application, we require a minimum of GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in English, Maths, and Science. Students who do not meet this requirement will be considered on an individual basis providing they complete the pre-course reading material prior to their start date with Goodenough College – University Residence.

Speaking English is not necessary for everyday activities at college which are conducted through our team members; however, if you would like to talk with another student or staff member it may be beneficial to have some knowledge of the language.

While most residents share accommodation where there is usually at least one native speaker per room, Goodenough College – University Residence offers housing with separate bathrooms (including en suite) and a limited amount of single rooms for students who do not speak English.
